Guatemala earthquake: Magnitude 6.0 earthquake hits Guatemala!
Just after six days from the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti, an earthquake of 6.0 magnitude struck Guatemala City today at 10:40 am. The quake that occurred 60 miles away from Republic of Guatemala, 39km west-southwest of Ahuachapan, El Salvador and 53km west-southwest of Cuilapa took the citizens by surprise but did not inflict much damage.
“We felt a tremor that was a bit strong. we are monitoring the area but there is no damage here. it was a light movement that lasted for a few seconds,” said Luis Medina from the Guatemalan tourist office in Puerto Quetzal, on the south coast.
Located at a mountain valley called Valle de la Ermita in the south central part of the country, Republic of Guatemala, the place has been affected several times by earthquakes. The worst quakes were registered in 1917/1918 and 1976.
The worst one was the one which occurred in 1976. it struck on February 4, 1976 and was a 7.5 Mw earthquake, centered in the Motagua Fault, about 160 km northeast of Guatemala City, Guatemala. The earthquake struck during the early morning (at 3.01 am, local time) when most people were asleep. Approximately 23,000died, 76,000 were injured, and many thousands left homeless.
