Boy’s bottled message found 125 miles away

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., June 16 (UPI) — an Arizona boy who dropped a message in a bottle into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico said the bottle was found a year later by a science team.

Jack Johnson, 12, of Scottsdale, said he dropped the bottle containing a note with his name, phone number and address into the ocean near Puerto Vallarta in October 2008, the Arizona Republic reported.

Johnson said he received a letter in March from scientist Peter Schaaf, who explained he and his students discovered the bottle Jan. 30 while performing ecological mapping and sampling on the uninhabited Isla Maria Magdalena, about 125 miles north of Puerto Vallarta.

“The distance that the bottle traveled before getting to the island was so long,” Jack said. “What are the odds of the bottle being washed up on a deserted island and still being found?”

The boy said he has been keeping in touch with Schaaf via e-mail.

Man allegedly made up beer theft story

GAINESVILLE, Fla., June 16 (UPI) — Police in Florida said they arrested a man who lost his beer and called 911 with a fictitious story of his friends attacking and robbing him.

Gainesville police said friends asked Joseph Piser, 47, to leave late Saturday because he “became belligerent” and he was unable to find his beer after leaving, the Gainesville Sun reported.

Piser then called 911 and claimed his friends had attacked him and stolen his quart of Bud Ice beer, the arrest report states.

Police said 10 officers responded to the robbery report and became suspicious when he changed his story and had no injuries to support his claims of a physical attack.

Piser was arrested and charged with a third-degree felony count of misusing the 911 system and a first-degree misdemeanor count of knowingly making a false report. He was taken to the Alachua County jail in lieu of $20,000 bond.

Math teacher adds up 75 years in classroom

BALTIMORE, June 16 (UPI) — A 93-year-old Maryland math teacher marking his 75th year at the head of the classroom says he is still teaching three classes a day and has no plans to quit.

Paul Miller said he first began teaching in 1934, after obtaining a degree in elementary education from “the cheapest school that I could find,” and he has now been teaching for an estimated 27,000 school days, ABC News reported.

Miller eventually earned two graduate degrees from Johns Hopkins and Louisiana State University, often teaching college-level math courses alongside his workload at Ner Israel high school outside Baltimore, where he has taught for 51 years.

“The greatest thing is, you see the product of your work and you can take pride in it,” Miller said of his profession.

Guinness World Records said the longest-ever serving teacher was Medarda de Jesus Leon de Uzcategui of Venezuela, who began teaching when she was 12 and continued for 96 years.

Teen helps deliver baby sister on birthday

ORLANDO, Fla., June 16 (UPI) — A Florida teen marked her 16th birthday by helping to deliver her baby sister in a van as she drove her mother to the hospital.

Kim Carrick of Orlando said she woke her daughter, Kaitlyn, on her birthday Monday and asked her for a ride to Winter Park Memorial Hospital because she felt her baby, due June 24, coming early, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported.

“I told her: ‘Drive as fast as you can. If you get pulled over, I don’t care,’” Kim Carrick said.

However, Carrick said the baby was coming too quickly, so Kaitlyn pulled over at a gas station and called 911 while the impatient infant made its way into the world.

Doctors said baby Kylee Elizabeth was born healthy at 6 pounds, 8 ounces.

“I didn’t know what to feel: happy, excited and scared — all at the same time,” Kaitlyn said. “This was the best birthday ever.”

Survivor's Ethan Zohn's Cancer Is in Remission

ever since he first started treatments for a rare form of Hodgkin’s Disease last year, Survivor: Africa winner Ethan Zohn has documented his journey in video on PEOPLE.com. He and girlfriend Jenna Morasca, winner of Survivor: Amazon, have been grateful for the support of those tracking his progress – and are thrilled they have some good news to share.

“A few weeks ago, we got his first clean CT scan,” says Morasca. “Now we can officially call him ‘in remission.’ we were so nervous for this test because good news on this test meant we could start our lives again.”

the couple had been down this road before.

After he thought chemotherapy had worked to eradicate his cancer at the end of last August, Zohn learned it had come back. “The last clean scan we got was good but then we had to enter the stem cell transplant,” Morasca says, “which was quite a long and daunting process.”

Along the way, Zohn recovered from other hurdles of an equally emotional nature, such as the death of friend Jenn Lyon from breast cancer in January. but in April, when a nurse practitioner gave the couple the results of the scan, “both Ethan and I jumped up and hugged her!” Morasca says. “I cannot begin to explain the happiness and relief we felt.”

the first thing the pair did to celebrate was to go on vacation, their first trip in more than a year, to Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Soon, Zohn will be traveling more as he begins taping a series of shows called Outside Today for a new network, outside Television, in Portland, Ore. and in June, the couple will go to South Africa for a few weeks “to work with the charity he founded with his Survivor winnings, Grassroot Soccer,” Morasca says, “and watch the World Cup games.”

sure enough, “Ethan says he is just excited to start living again and enjoying every precious moment,” says Morasca. “We wanted to come out of this stronger people with more appreciation for each other and the world – and that’s exactly what happened.”

Trojan Virus Encrypts your files, holds password ransom for $300

Security researchers discover a new “ransomware” Trojan that encrypts files on an infected PC and then demands $300 in exchange for a decryption password.

Virus hunters have discovered a new Trojan that encrypts files on an infected computer and then demands $300 in ransom for a decryption password.

The Trojan, identified as Cryzip, uses a commercial zip library to store the victims documents inside a password-protected zip file and leaves step-by-step instructions on how to pay the ransom to retrieve the files.

It is not yet clear how the Trojan is being distributed, but security researchers say it was part of a small e-mail spam run that successfully evaded anti-virus scanners by staying below the radar.

Sunbelt tracks a DIY Trojan-builder program. Click here to read more.

While this type of attack, known as “ransomware,” is not entirely new, it points to an increasing level of sophistication among online thieves who use social engineering tactics to trick victims into installing malware, said Shane Coursen, senior technical consultant at Moscow-based anti-virus vendor Kaspersky Lab.

The LURHQ Threat Intelligence Group, based in Chicago, was able to crack the encryption code used in the Cryzip Trojan and determine how the files are encrypted and the payment mechanism that has been set up to collect the $300 ransom.

According to a LURHQ advisory, Cryzip searches an infected hard drive for a wide range of widely used file types, including Word, Excel, PDF and JPG images.

Once commandeered, the files are zipped and overwritten the text: “Erased by Zippo! GO OUT!!!”

The Trojan then deletes all the files, leaving only the encrypted file with the original file name, followed by the “_CRYPT.ZIP” extension.

A new directory named “AUTO_ZIP_REPORT.TXT” is created with specific instructions on how to use the E-Gold online currency and payment system to send ransom payments.

The instructions, which are marked by misspellings and poor grammar, contain the following text: “Your computer catched our software while browsing illigal pornpages, all your documents, text files, databases was archived with long enought password. You can not guess the password for your archived files – passwordlenght is more then 10 symbols that makes all password recovery programs fail to bruteforce it (guess password by trying all possible combinations).”

The owner of the infected machine is warned not to search for the program that encrypted the data, claiming that it simply doesnt exist on the hard drive.

“If you really care about documents and information in encrypted filesyou can pay using electonic currency $300,” the note says. “Reporting to police about a case will not help you, they do not know password. Reporting somewhere about our E-Gold account will not help you to restore files. this is your only way to get yours files back.”

Ziff Davis Media eSeminars invite: Learn how to proactively shield your organizations against threats at all tiers of the network, Symantec will show you how, live on March 21 at 4 p.m. ET. Sponsored by Symantec.

The Trojan author uses scores of E-Gold accounts simultaneously to get around potential shutdowns, according to LURHQ, which published the complete list of E-Gold accounts in the advisory.

Officials from E-Gold, which operates out of the Caribbean island of Nevis, were not available for comment.

“Infection reports are not widespread, so it is not believed this is a mass threat by any means,” LURHQ said. However, the company said social engineering malware is typically more successful when it is delivered in low volume to get around anti-virus detections.

“[M]ore attention means the likely closing of the accounts used for the anonymous money transfer,” LURHQ said.

Gingrich Claims Tire Inflation Lines Big Oil's Pockets

Gingrich Claims Tire Inflation Lines Big Oil’s Pockets

Last night on Fox News, host Sean Hannity and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) returned (as they often do) to Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) recent suggestion that Americans inflate their tires properly in order to save energy costs.

Seeming to outdo his previous false attacks on this issue, Gingrich claimed that Obama’s idea is actually encouraging Americans to “enrich Big Oil” because selling air has “a higher profit margin than selling gasoline”:

GINGRICH: well, I got a very funny e-mail from a retired military officer in Tampa who pointed out that most tire inflation is done at service stations and you pay for it. And it’s actually a higher profit margin than selling gasoline. So Sen. Obama was urging you to go out and enrich Big Oil by inflating your tires instead of buying gas.

This claim is absurd for a number of reasons. First, gas station owners, not Big Oil, receive the profits from selling air — if they sell air at all (presumably from mechanized air machines). second, air is free. So of course the profit margin for selling air is going be higher than a gallon of gas. By contrast, the cost of oil accounts for a significant portion of the price of gasoline. So any profits from gasoline sales (which are actually quite small) also go to the gas station owners, after Big Oil has already been paid.

But beyond Gingrich’s ridiculous assertion, the Auto Alliance has noted that maintaining proper tire pressure is “more important than you may think” because it saves fuel and reduces costs and greenhouse gases.

Indeed, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) — whom Gingrich once praised as one of the “great winners” — agrees. Today he endorsed the thrust of Obama’s idea, saying “you can reduce your fuel costs by more than 15%. And I am talking about simple things, like proper tire pressure, avoiding rapid starts and stops, and keeping your engine tuned.”

Kathy Ireland Says She Wasn’t Drunk on Red Carpet

Francis Specker /Landov

Kathy Ireland was the buzz of the red carpet at Sunday’s Oscars – and not for good reasons. The former supermodel became a trending topic on Twitter after appearing on ABC’s pre-Academy Awards red carpet special, looking somewhat awkward while interviewing celebrities.

“Dear ABC, whoever OK’d Kathy Ireland on the red carpet… should be fired. Immediately,” one viewer, @markicostello, Tweeted. Another viewer, @liliceprincess, was equally critical, Tweeting, “Kathy Ireland was posing way too much. her hands were robotic. it was all very awkward.”

For her part, Ireland answered back to her critics on her official Twitter page, often responding directly to people’s comments. she maintained she wasn’t on medication or drinking, and was just happy to be there.

“Laughed @ being hot topic on twitter 2night,” she Tweeted. “So many misunderstood that the J.O.Y. was being invited 2 co host. Grateful to all. Thank You!”

shearlings got plowed: Jim Edwards Has Done A Nice Job On The AHF …

over at b|Net Pharma, Jim Edwards (that’s him, at right) has a very well-put-together narrative on the controversy surrounding Merck’s less-than-transparent US pricing strategy for Isentress®, the clearly life-saving, best-in-class AIDS drug (which often prescribed in combination with a cocktail of other drugs — so that the annual bill for US patients runs close to $22,000). He actually picked up on this story, from my earlier piece — and then, after some solid probing and skeptical quesitoning from him (via back-channel e-mail), I fed him several packets of additional material (all long “hidden in plain sight” — in the public record) for his, thus — do go read it all:

. . . .so which is it? HIV activists want to know. If it’s a first-line drug, why hasn’t price competition set in, as it did with another HIV drug, Crixivan, which Merck launched at a discount to competitors?

there are two reasons that hasn’t happened. First, in 2008, when it was still a salvage therapy, Merck generously announced that it would freeze the price of Isentress until December 2010. at the time, that sounded reasonable — Isentress is a new type of anti-retroviral, an “integrase inhibitor,” the first of its kind, and patients were hopeful that it would be a success.

It was too successful, as it turned out. . . .

Good on ya’,” Jim. Do go read all of his.

First documentation of counterfeit gold bars, plated tungsten …

5:26p ET Monday, March 1, 2010

Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

What appears to be the first documentation of counterfeit gold bars made of plated tungsten was noted today by zero Hedge as having been reported by a German television station. the counterfeit bar reportedly is in the possession of the W.C. Heraeus gold foundry in Hanau, Germany, said to be the world’s largest.

This sort of thing might shake the gold market even more than, say, the International Monetary Fund’s confession that it really doesn’t have any gold and that it has been selling only bookkeeping entries all this time.
