At the Google I/O conference in may, the company previewed the new Android 2.0, Google’s mobile operating system. Major highlights include the new Android search, text-to-speech compatibility and gesture support. however, this preview has now been made available to developers through Google’s code depository. While still in testing phases and very unstable, developers can take the release for a test drive or even take key 2.0 elements and place them into the stable Android 1.5 build.

Some of the main features in Android 2.0 are:

Android Search: The search engine will allow you to search both your phone and the web through the same browser.

Text-To-Speech: if you have a Google Voice account, you can pretty soon link it to your Android phone as well.

Multi-touch Support: Like Apple’s smart phones, the Android system now allows for users to perform actions by touching the screen in multiple places at the same time, for instance, to reduce the size of an image. this functionality was left out of Android 1.0 since Google was worried about legal issues with Apple, who has pioneered this feature.

Gesture Support: Instead of having to search through the entire contact list to get to the “S” names on your phone, all you will now need to do is write the letter “S” on the screen.

With all these new features still only available in a developer’s release, it might be a smart idea for regular users to wait till the Android 2.0 is released in a slightly more stable form before installing it on their phone.

Attendees at Google’s I/O Conference this week were greeted with an Android phone interface that shares yet more common ground with the iPhone from the company’s close neighbor Apple, including the first evidence of a dedicated app store.

The search engine giant’s project lead for Android, Andy Rubin, dropped hints at the event that his firm’s commitment to open development access doesn’t preclude it from creating an official marketplace for Android apps. Instead, he argued that the concept could be essential for promoting the mobile operating system and its partners.

“It would be a great benefit to the Android community to provide a place where people can go to safely and securely download content and where a billing system would allow developers to get paid for their effort,” The Register heard Rubin say. “We wouldnt have done our job if we didnt provide something that helps developers get distribution.”

While details of just what this would involve are still murky at this stage, the Google manager’s live demonstration of the latest version of Android revealed a conspicuous “Market” button already in place — albeit one not explored during the presentation.

Even so, the addition creates an unusual similarity between Google’s commercial platform and that coming with Apple’s iPhone 2.0 firmware in June. where most mobile app stores are operated independently of hardware or software, such as Handango, both the Android Market and the iPhone’s App Store will be controlled by the same companies responsible for their respective operating systems.

Google’s open platform is believed to allow installations of apps without official blessing, however, in contrast to the official certification process necessary for iPhone software.

Although one of the more conspicuous similarities, the I/O gathering also revealed a few familiar, if improved, interface elements initially seen in Apple’s hardware.

Of note are multiple home screens accessed through the same swiping gestures as those introduced with Apple’s January firmware update, though with an extra twist: while Apple’s screen is limited to application icons and web shortcuts, the Android front-end uses the extra space for links to particular contacts and even immediately viewable widgets like clocks.

Even the slide-to-unlock motion, which is a simple left-to-right affair with the iPhone, expands to a nine-point system with Android that lets users secure the phone with a memorized pattern.

And while Google has regularly declared its pride in offering Google Maps with the iPhone, the Mountain View, Calif.-based company has reserved some of its best features for its own platform. The accelerometer that largely governs just screen rotation in the iPhone can now be used in a new Street View mode that rotates the point of view simply by changing direction in the real world.

Google itself won’t produce handsets and is leaving that responsibility to established handset makers like HTC and Samsung, many of which are expected to produce a mix of devices that will kick off Android’s debut late this year.

Apple is going after HTC likely because they’re easy pickings (likely few patents related to mobile phones).

If Apple went after Palm, Palm would hand Apple’s ass back to them. Apple’s iPhone flat-out infringes on a HUGE portfolio of Palm patents dating back into the 1990s, from the phone dial screen to threaded SMS/MMS to the ring/mute switch and so-on.

If Apple sued Palm, Palm would easily be able to get a judgment shutting down all iPhone production, decimating Apple’s earnings. Notice that after Cook threatened Palm, Palm’s release pointed out Palm’s HUGE library of smartphone patents, and Apple promptly went away — deciding to bully HTC instead.

Considering how derivative iPhone is of Treo phones in particular (including being designed by lots of former Palm engineers), it would be really funny if Palm decided to sue Apple for the iPhone’s numerous infringements, citing the HTC case as precedent. Engadget did a quick look at the iPhone’s infringements on Palm’s patents and found numerous ones that were just the tip of a much larger iceberg. Palm’s smartphone IP goes back to 1992 — 15 years before the launch of the first Apple phone. not a smart fight for Apple to pick.

Same goes for Motorola (Google’s other major partner). They’ve got smartphone patents going back to the 1990s and the original StarTAC-based PDAs. Apple would not be successful challenging either Palm or Motorola, who have a long history of patent innovation, with its measly set of iPhone patents.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP)—The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenseman JordanLeopold(notes) in a deal with the Florida Panthers.

Florida traded Leopold to Pittsburgh for a second-round pick in the 2010 NHLEntry Draft. The move was announced Monday, two days before the league’s tradedeadline.

The 29-year-old Leopold signed a one-year contract with the Panthers inJuly. in the summer, he was part of a deal that sent the rights to defensemanJay Bouwmeester(notes) to Calgary.
